Architecture

This project is initiated by Piknik Frequency ry and it aims at building a temporary structure for the location drawn in the attached map. The main goal is to create an alternative to urban over planning, to keep a high degree of spontaneity and creating more civic participation through communal places where people can gather and be together, without having to consume. Giving the community the responsibility for an open space brings challenges but also potentials.
We defend here that the planning of Helsinki should not be over-planned and thus detached from the citizens, it must remain strong degrees of freedom in spontaneous and / or temporary, experimental infrastructure. Even if these can be important to create a certain routine effect of the everyday life, we need to enact degrees of improvisation within it for the balance between the expectable and surprise.
The structure would have the following features:
• temporary installation for 2 years or longer of around 300 sqm
• One floor, height of maximum ceiling height of 5 meters
• Open access, no doors, nor windows
• Based on, if possible recycled, wood with small movable concrete blocks for the foundation
• No electricity, water or waste water connection
