After graduating in my first Master in Civil Engineering (specialized in geotechnics), in Portugal, after 5 years of studying, I went to Germany and started my work life as an environmental engineer. There, in Frankfurt, I was employed by TBW GmbH.

The core of my work was to plan and to build anaerobic biogas plants in developing countries within a public and private investment framework. These were low budget solutions to improve both local energy independence and sanitation.

Inadequate or even lack of sanitation is a key social, health and environmental problem in the majority of countries. Public programs are insufficient and do not reach the majority of the population. Private initiative alone often only serves a few, who then mostly remain affected by those without suitable sanitation and do not get their co-operation. Lack of finance for investment and operation, lack of integration into dwelling and economic activity, resulting often in unsuitable technical and environmental approaches, and a lack of participation, can sometimes be overcome if public and private actors manage to co-operate and agree upon a suitable division of labour and framework of responsibilities, and thus turn sanitation into a joint development priority, which can then help as well to save and reuse valuable water, nutrient and energy resources.

There are uncountable hindrances of Public-Private Partnerships for truly cost-efficient

sanitation. However there is little alternative. My work at TBW, and within a number of projects, made some substantial progress on that rocky road to combine private initiative and public responsibility and participation with more sustainable sanitation and recycling strategies.

After having worked as a Civil Engineer for 1 year, in Frankfurt, in environmental energy projects for developing countries, I applied to study Architecture at the TU Darmstadt in 2003. To do so I needed to know German. 11 months of casual learning + 1 month of intensive course and I passed the demanding DSH test, narrowly!

And so I did my second Master, now in Architecture, supporting it financially by working part time as a musician, on tours and in office jobs as a civil engineer / architect. During this time, I had the fortune (although he never liked me) to be a student of Prof Manfred Hegger of the department of Entwerfen und Energieeffizientes Bauen (Project and energy efficient construction). This department got notorious when it won in 2007, the Solar Decathlon in Washington DC, with its modular furniture, low energy consumption, solar panels on the window shades, etc.

One project I did in this department was a modular school. The goal of the project demanded by the department was to make a school, energy efficient, which could be built fast and cheaply.  Although the Decathlon house was a hit, it also costed an absurd amount of money, speculated to be around 1 million euros. Luckily for our German team, the costs were not considered back then as an evaluation item to win the competition, but only th operational factors of efficiency in energy consumption.

With the modular school, and later on in all of my proposed projects, I regard a building within its life-cycle, from acquisition, design, construction, operation and dismantling, or reintegration in another economy.  Energy efficiency must be the accumulated energy from this whole cycle, not only during its operation.

Hegger graded my project with the lowest score possible, but today, I am close to demonstrate that I might actually have been right, through my research on Architectural Democracy

I used clay to model this project. I did so as we had plenty of it in the workshop downstairs at TU Darmstadt. The "lab" of Prof Auslender.

Little did I know that after some years I would be working just beside this same spot of Hamburg. Not for a bridge but for a concert hall.

The Professor of this University Project was a Civil Engineer. He was inspiring. I got better insights of Engineering with him than during my Civil Engineering Master Degree in Porto.

Conversion of the oil refinery plant of Perafita in Porto, Portugal, into a city block, with a micro economy structure based on the management of the local energetical resources.

A self-sufficient small city containing unplanned spaces as buffers for adaptation (population growth, food, energy production ratios, etc.). An achieved purpose has to be flexible enough in its budget and functionality, to be able to morph according to the several unexpected variables which time always brings. The total certainties which architects so nicely sell to a layperson are never to be trusted.

Architecture based on the minimum requirements for the maximum profit. Who is then responsible for the social problems created by such designs? For several years I did hade to design such buildings and this was one of the reasons why I stepped out of such process and started Architectural Democracy.

From all the enounters and discussions along the process, one email I found worht mentioning, from an Arizonan Architect who travelled all the way to see the exhibition opening: "Pedro, that was great fun.
